iPhone 3GS India Price

iphone3g-vs-iphone3gs

Over 1 million units already sold this baby is definitely to get. Yeah.. lets talk about iPhone 3GS and then iPhone 3GS price in India. What I liked about this year’s WWDC was that Apple did not brag about their iPhone 3GS too much. What I mean by that is the release of iPhone 3GS, World Wide Web is flooded with the Benchmark of iPhone 3GS. It is actually x4 times faster than iPhone 3G which is over delivery of what iPhone 3GS announced at WWDC i.e. x2 times faster.

OK, lets get to business now. I mean the price of iPhone 3GS in India and price of  iPhone 3G in India after the $99 announcement. Last year if you remember when Steve Jobs announced the iPhone 3G price as $199, Indian media and people went crazy and starting speculating the dawn of competitive phone manufacturers.  People thought iPhone 3G in India will be available at around 8,000 Rs. But that did not happen because Indian market can not have a subsidized iPhone 3G whereas in US AT&T has subsidized the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS and its available with 2 year contract. So iPhone 3G in India was launched with the a very high price tag :

iPhone 3G 8 GB (Black) for Rs 31,000
iPhone 3G 16 GB (White & Black) for Rs 36,100

There is not much calculation to be done for the iPhone 3GS version as the price remains the same. But we might see some price cut this time by both operators. Don’t expect too much.

Now the most important part is the sale of iPhone 3G 8GB which is now sold @ $99 in US. If we do the calculation $199 in US and in India 31,000. $99 in US and iPhone 3GS price in India should be around 26,000 by deducting the $100 from the price tag.

So the final iPhone 3GS price in India should be something like this as per my prediction, considering the fact that this time both operators would like to subsidize a little bit of amount with 3G data plans to attract more customers as they could not capitalize on this beauty last time.

iPhone 3G 8 GB (Black) for Rs 26,000
iPhone 3GS 16 GB (Black) for Rs 31,000
iPhone 3GS 32 GB (White & Black) for Rs 35,000

If the prices I predicted are correct then my plan of getting one would be trashed. Anyways what do you think ?

What will be the price of  iPhone 3GS in India when launched in August this year?

Will there be 3G launched as well with the new version of iPhone 3GS ?

Have your say !

The prices you have mentioned would be unsubsidized prices
and i guess the price right now has fallen because of the slight strengthening of the rupee to Rs48/1$
    So 600$ ( For the iPhone 3GS 8GB) translate to approx Rs.29,000
    (just a stupid observation)
Subsidized, if at all, should be far lesser.. Although it wont be as less as the US rate of 200$

And also.. Any specific date in August mentioned yet??

No dates mentioned as of now. I believe Airtel and Vodafone will again take their own sweet time to decide who will break the news first.

Apple India, as well as Vodafone and Airtel, have no marketing sense at all.
What works in the US for Apple wont necessarily work for Apple India. Apple US indulge in simplistic, minimalistic marketing, which has an effect over there. Whereas in India, you need more than that for sure.
You need to really put a date of launch at least a month before the actual launch or have they resigned to their fate that the iPhone 3GS will go the way of the 3G.
They need to clarify to the Indian audience about the features and the rectifications ( cut copy and paste, mms, and msg forwarding )
The next thing that they should do is to lower the price a bit and let Airtel and Vodafone offer and persuade its customers to subscribe to internet services hence increasing their earnings, a part of which, could go to Apple.
A Win Win situation for all.

Yes, absolutely correct but who would make them understand. I feel Airtel and Vodafone know that iPhone is not meant for Indians. Till date you won’t find much people using it but on the other hand you may find other phones like nokia very popular just because of one thing and that is transfer of files over bluetooth. Indian people who have bought iPhone is purely because for the status symbol. iPhone could have had an amazing market if it was introduced in India like US on subsidiary and not full then at least some amount.

Airtel now will be selling Unlocked iPhone now this time around Vodafone may be selling iPhone on subsidiary as Vodafone did not get the Unlocked option. Lets see what happens.

The Iphone in the US comes with a 2 year contract and a mandatory data plan (30 bucks + fees). Thats why its subsidised. Also existing customers if they want to upgrade half way through their contract, the prices are 299,399,499. So add 200 to all phones if you do not buy a 2 year contract but you are an existing ATT customer. The data plan has to be taken though.
So the bill comes to $75 with taxes for a single iphone.Did I mention the activation fees ( 29.99). Do the math people. By dangling the $99 carrot, they siphon nearly 1800 bucks over the 2 year period.
This would be like buying a phone for say Rs. 8000 and racking a Rs. 3500 bill every month for 2 years.
Sounds mor like EMI to me.

Lets see what happens. I think you are quite right here. This time Airtel and Vodafone might wanna change their strategy and provide some subsidy to the customers.

I don’t know why people are so crazy about a thing like iphone where as you can have much better phone in every respect for the same or less price from other brands like Sony ericsson, nokia or samsung even T Mobile available in India is fantastic buy.
Even true mobile ,higher end smart phones from above mentioned brands have much better features not to mention Blackberry phone for official use.
I think its people psychology to go behind things which are tough to get due to any constraints may it be money or anything else. i think only things diff to iphone is its big screen and multi touch UI , else it took them time till june 17 2009 to provide mobile features which were there on mobile of other brands since the inception of multimedia mobiles and China produces trillions of gadgets with same rich features as iphone (up to 90% features)and are with in the reach of most of the third world countries i think that is some good cause and humane thing in true sense.
      “Damn iphone”.

Everyone have their own point of view. Things that I like, might be waste of time for you. And Apple products are known for their Quality, they don’t cheat people. They put millions of $ into research of small things which can simply boost a Apple product owner’s productivity and experience. Apple is to boast, and yes if I had one I would boast it. People don’t wanna buy an iPhone because its very costly.

Just answer one question if Airtel or Vodafone were to sell iPhone @ $99 and $199 for 3GS would you not buy it ? Do you remember the madness last year when Steve Jobs announced iPhone to be available in India as well and the price of iPhone.

the 3GS does not have an 8GB version..

    • Kuld33p / Jun 30 2009

Oh.. My bad.. You caught me. Thanks for the correction. Updated it.

  4. Darpan / Jul 19 2009

Nice thoughts. Lets see what happens. I don’t think Airtel will provide Unlocked version just like that. There will be some strings attached to it.

  5. GaMe / Aug 5 2009

I think people across the country have misinterpreted Aug ‘09 as 9th August which is actually August 2009. If you see the calendar which Apple displays also shows Aug ‘09 which is actually Aug 2009. So it would come in August 2009 only but not on 9th August.

One of my stupid interpretation which might be right i.e. Last year it was launched on 22nd Aug 08 which was a Friday and if you notice carefully most of the launches worldwide have been on Friday’s only. So lets see when the most wanted device is making a touchdown on our soil.
