Hydrogen Enegery in your pocket now

Remember those sci-fi movies and TV series where people have endless amount of energy and that too bundled in a small package. I was thinking if I was ever able to see anything of that kind in my life. Horizon has developed a pocket sized fuel cell power plant. Its called Minipack. Minipack can power up/charge mobile, mp3 players, GPS devices and other small consumer electronics which does not take more than 1.5 to 2W power. As per the press release you would need to replace 1 Horizon Fuel Cell compared to 10000 AAA alkaline batteries. This is great news. Check out the press release here and watch the working demo video.

Some features at a glance:

    1. Refillable H2 storage!
    2. Cheaper for the amount of storable energy ($/Wh)
    3. More available energy than most existing devices (Wh)
    4. No self discharge – energy can be stored in solid state for years
    5. No wall sockets ideal for remote “off-grid” use or international travel
    6. Smaller size for similar weight when compared to best available batteries
    7. Ready-to-use device – no need to charge cartridges prior to first-time use
    8. Easy to use (Universal USB for multiple devices), no need for adaptor plugs
    9. Multiple use – can be used for numerous portable devices, not just cell-phones!
    10. Eco-friendly: if disposed, canisters do not contain any mercury, cadmium or lead
    11. “Hot swappable” energy by simply swapping “empty for full” cartridges on the go
    12. Carriable on-board aircraft cabin – thanks to recent legislation on metal hydride devices
    13. Infrastructure for the future – HydroFILL “home refueling station” can be used for many other fuel cell devices

I really hope to see Horizon working in collaboration with the Wireless Energy product makes. That way we would not have to connect anything to our mobiles, mp3 players. They would automatically get charged as soon as they are brought in a certain area. That would be cool. And how about using this thing in our consumer electronics. And give a thought to the bigger fuel cell power plants. This stuff is really getting serious. So many ideas to implement. I think I may be able to live through a Stargate age in my life.
