
Few days ago I came across this when I was looking for some interesting new innovation/ideas that could really change the world in future. I was surfing the web and searching for these kind of innovative ideas. Then I came across this website TED. You don’t know about TED ? Let me talk about TED first then. TED was formed in 1984 to bring the innovative and path breaking ideas from around the world on three simple concepts; Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED). TED is basically a non-profit group focused on brininging the most innovative and perspective ideas to the world. These ideas can be from any stream Technology, Entertainment or Design.
What I saw today is a revolutionary innovation in technology front. I must say it will change the course of future for human race. Its called WiTricity. As the name suggest, its Wireless Electricity. WiTricity Power is about ransferring electric energy or power over distance without wires. WiTricity talks about a new system that can deliver power to devices without the need for wires. The new system exploits simple physics principles and can be used to charge a range of electronic devices over several meters. I mean I just get so enthusiastic and anticipated when I even think about the implementation of WiTricity Power. As per me this innovation is definitely going to save our lives in longer run. Some of the early developed products have already been shown in CES 2009 and various other public demos. But I am thinking of future and bring you some of the possible and earth shattering implementations of WiTricity that is really going to make a difference to our environment.
Environment : The worst fear the whole world is facing after terrorism is Global Warming. Global Warming has really been talk of the town for the last decade or so. The major part for polluting earth has been played by vehicles around the world. We have already seen a need of hybrid cars. Now just imagine the hybrid cars running on a magnetic road. I mean not just car each and every vehicle on the earth could run on WiTricity. No pollution at all.
Home Appliances : Have you seen your Cmputer table from back side lately. How ugly wire cluttered it looks. Just imagine a nice clean monitor with wireless mouse and keyboard which you don’t ever have to think about changing batteries. A nice 45″ plasma in your house runnning without any wire. I mean wireless transfer of data and wireless electricity i.e. WiTricity Power. That is going to be amazing. Your home theater, microwave, mobile phones, bulbs, decorative lights. I mean the list is just endless and possibilities too.
Industries : Till now our industries have not been able to get befitted by Nuke power. I mean its been around for a while now and developed countries like US, UK might have been using it. But its really not commercially available. Just imagine when our industries would have their own Nuclear Power Plants and their whole factory would run on wireless electricity. I mean pollution would be an ancient story.
Just last thought. At this point of time the technology only works in a certain range. I mean the transponder and receptor has to be in a given range only then it works. But the range could be widened. Imagine a central nuclear plant transmitting enery and the whole world is getting power from it. May be I have gone too far with my imagination. But this is what I am talking about.
And you know what, it is all possible by a bunch of small college kids of MIT.

Some of the benefits that you have mentioned here are cosmetic. The advantage I see in this WiTricity is this:
In our country we have kilometers and kilometers of wires from the generating stations carrying electricity to cities, towns and villages, and all these wires sufffer from very high transmission losses. As far as I know, nobody even calculates these losses.
So thats one area where WiTricity is going to help. We burn so much coal to generate electricity, only to lose half of it to the air on the way to its destination? Not any more
I guess WiTricity also has some sort of transmission loss, so its not that it will deliver the electricity across without any deficit.
